Aydafer Primary School

In May 2023, we opened a brand new primary school in Aydafer, a rapidly growing township that previously had no school. Aydafer Primary school is now providing access to education for hundreds of children who were previously out of school or walking over 2 hours a day to reach another school.

This region in Amhara is still recovering from the 2-year Tigray Conflict, during which schools were closed. These children have therefore had a large gap in their academic, social and emotional learning. Never before has a safe school and sense of normality been more important.

Getaya is one of the wonderful female teachers at Aydafer Primary school. She had her own baby recently. The opening of this school in her community means she can also access local employment, allowing her to return to work after her maternity leave. Female teachers in Ethiopia are so important! They inspire girls, create safe spaces, break barriers and promote equality in education.

With our previous construction of the nearby Aydafer Health Post, and access to WASH, we are addressing the holistic needs of families in this area.
