Aydafer Primary School

In May 2023, we opened a brand new primary school in Aydafer, a rapidly growing township that previously had no school. Aydafer Primary School is now providing access to education for hundreds of children who were previously out of school or walking more than two hours each day to reach another school.

This region of Amhara is still recovering from the Tigray Conflict (2020–2022), during which schools across the area were closed. Children in Aydafer have therefore experienced a significant gap in their academic, social, and emotional development. A safe school environment—and a return to normal routine—has never been more important.

Getaya is one of the wonderful female teachers at Aydafer Primary School. She recently had her first baby, and the opening of this school in her own community means she can access local employment and return to work after maternity leave. Female teachers in Ethiopia play a vital role: they inspire girls, create safe learning spaces, break social barriers, and promote gender equality in education.

With our previous construction of the nearby Aydafer Health Post, and access to WASH, we are addressing the holistic needs of families in this area.
