Getergie Primary School
Originally built in 1996, Getergie Primary School is the second-oldest government primary school in Lalibela and has been a vital learning space for generations of children. After nearly three decades of use, the classrooms had deteriorated significantly: the floors were cracked and damaged, paint had faded, ceilings were collapsing, and electrical fixtures were exposed and no longer functioning. These conditions made it difficult for students to concentrate and for teachers to deliver lessons safely.
In 2025, Create Impact partnered with the school community and UK-based charity Lalibela Trust to complete major renovations across eight classrooms, transforming them into bright, safe and functional learning environments. The scope of works included retiling floors, re-plastering and repainting walls, installing new ceiling panels, upgrading electrical systems, and refreshing the building’s much-loved educational murals.
Today, Getergie Primary School provides a safe and inspiring environment for 1,124 students from Grades 1 to 8, supported by 65 teachers and 16 administrative staff, the majority of whom are women.
This project ensures that one of Lalibela’s most historic schools can continue shaping the next generation.
